Tswalu, the largest private reserve in South Africa, is part of the southern Kalahari. Along with Tswalu Moste, the safari lodge with 7 chalets, Tswalu Tarkuni, the reserve's private lodge located about half and hour away, provides a unique setting in which to experience the fascinating natural scenery close up.

Tswalu Tarkuni was once the game lodge of Stephen Bolders, the founder of the extensive reserve. The spacious safari lodge is ideal for friends and families wishing to spend their holidays together in an exclusive atmosphere.

The traditional thatched roof lowers itself in a protective manner over the house and terraces. The natural materials used create a harmonious transition from architecture to landscape.

The spacious pool area offers magnificent views onto the open country and the almost endless sky over the Kalahari Desert. A nearby water hole gives you an opportunity to observe the wildlife right from your veranda in the evening.

The shady resting-place on the rustic outdoor platform invites you to spend leisurely hours under the open sky. The easy-going, carefree atmosphere penetrates into the inside of the rooms, flooded in lots of sunlight.

An unusual combination of elegance and rustic design features, such as natural stone walls, bare wooden beams and woven straw, creates the atmosphere in the rooms.

The two storeys of the lodge open out on to the terrace. Spacious floor-to-ceiling windows allow the boundaries between indoors and outdoors to merge into each other.

Fabrics in every shade of red form a nice contrast to the natural tones. The large open lounge gleams with rustic charm. In the evening, a warm fire crackles in the grate. In the adjoining romantically lit dining room, you can be pampered with South African delicacies.

The love of nature is present everywhere in Tswalu. Decorations with grasses, fruits and woods turn into unique works of art.

The individual items of furniture in the private bedrooms are very simple and have been carefully chosen. Plain cupboards, tables and stools enchant you with the vivid beauty of their material.

Every new day brings exciting experiences. There are lots of things to discover in this almost boundless country. Numerous fascinating species of animals are at home in this large game reserve.

The name Tswalu was carefully chosen. In the local language of the Tswana, the word means "new beginning". When Stephen Bolder acquired this wonderful spot in 1995, he had a vision of restoring the desert area to its original state. So lots of fences were pulled down and many wild animals were given a new home. This project is rigorously carried on today by the Oppenheimer family.

An open Land Rover and an experienced ranger are available at any time for observing the wildlife.

The countryside is like an open book to the rangers and they recognise even the most hidden tracks of the animals. They will happily tell you about the medicinal herbs of the Kalahari and about the San, the bushmen whose rock images and engravings can still be seen today.

Today more that 70 types of wild animals, among them black rhinoceros, African buffalo, scimitar-horned oryx, roan antelopes, cheetahs and lions are at home in Tswalu.
