An idyll on the Garden Route: Kurland Country Hotel
©SH.
A wide staircase with flowers climbing round it leads up to the private quarters. You can start the day quietly with a delicious breakfast on the secluded terrace
South Africa: The Kurland Country Hotel is located very close to the popular coastal resort of Plettenberg Bay. Twelve villas in Cape Dutch style are cradled here in picturesque surroundings between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean. The luxurious hotel complex is not only a welcome stopover for travellers along the Garden Route, but it’s also the top address for polo fans. Polo tournaments take place twice a year here

The delightful villas of this luxury hotel are arranged next to each other like a small farm. Bushes and shrubs blossom all around and everything is covered in roses
In addition to the large communal pool, almost all of the villas have a small private pool. On the sunny veranda, far away from any hustle and bustle, you can enjoy an afternoon nap on the comfortable teak sunloungers

There is a restaurant in the polo club, on the edge of the large polo-field just behind the spectator stands

Polo paradise for spectators and players: Kurland Country
©KH.
The tradition of polo dates back to Persia in the 3rd century BC. From there, it spread over the whole of Asia. It was not until 1860 that the British brought it to Europe and obviously to Kurland in South Africa too. In Plettenberg Bay, polo tournaments are today still played with passion and excitement in front of enthusiastic spectators in wonderful surroundings.
Exciting polo tournaments take place here twice a year. Mounted umpires make sure that the stick is always held in the right hand. That’s the rule

Outside of the polo season you can go on long rides, go walking, deep-sea fishing, play golf or go diving. And of course enjoy culinary delights: at a candlelight dinner in the restaurant.

South Africa is famous for its excellent wines. They are served in style in the Kurland.

Warm candlelight is reflected in the precious cut glass carafes. Roses are laid on every table. These fondly arranged details give you a taste of what’s to come: a delicious menu for sure

Roses are the trademark of this blossoming family-owned property. Their fragrance is everywhere. And busy helpers happily manoeuvre them indoors. Sometimes on their heads

The bathrooms have modern furnishings but also a touch of nostalgia. After a relaxing bath, the open fire in the hearth awaits you
Antique furniture, precious carpets and selected objets d’art decorate the interiors of the private villas. If you like, your afternoon tea can be served here. You can enjoy restful hours reflecting in this cosy atmosphere. And look forward to the next adventure: whale watching or a ride out into the vast paddocks perhaps? The best thing to do is sink back into the soft pillows and sleep on it first. The canopy watches over you while you dream sweetly

Kurland is really family-friendly. Ten of the twelve villas have their own children’s loft-rooms. Under the high gabled roofs, it’s just as colourful as the Villa Villekulla in the Pippi Longstocking children’s books. The young ones feel completely at home here
